So we\u2019re here tonight to make sure those stakes are understood, and the candidates are speaking directly to them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The forum was hosted by the Alaska Medicaid Coalition, the Alaska Caregivers Union SEIU775 and progressive-leaning organizations and labor groups at the Anchorage Loussac Library on Wednesday. Caregivers have a stronger voice when we are united and have each other\u2019s backs.<br><br><strong>Before we founded our Union in 2002, caregivers made minimum wage and got minimal respect. Since then, we have won<\/strong> <strong>better wages, better benefits, and better training.<\/strong><br><br>Membership in SEIU 775 is valuable. Only members are eligible for special <a href=\"https:\/\/seiu775.org\/membership-plus\/\"><strong>Membership Plus<\/strong><\/a> discounts and benefits. And only members have the right to participate fully in the internal affairs of the Union, vote for Union officers, run for Union office, be involved in collective bargaining, and vote to reject or ratify the collective bargaining agreement for your bargaining unit. Together, we are stronger \u2014 for ourselves, for our families and communities, and for our residents and clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How can I join SEIU 775?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are a caregiver providing in-home care as an IP at Consumer Direct or a unionized agency, a Nursing Home worker at a unionized home, or a Direct Support Worker at a unionized supported living provider, you are eligible to become a dues-paying member of SEIU 775. You can find the list of unionized employers at <a href=\"https:\/\/seiu775.org\/contracts\/\"><strong>seiu775.org\/contracts<\/strong><\/a>. Jubilee Underwood, R-Wasilla, would establish eleven standards of a CNA training program at no cost to the state to ensure that patients receive competent health care. The bill passed with 39 yes votes. Rep. David Nelson, R-0Anchorage was excused absent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt simply says through regulation, CNA training should reflect the real job, communicating with patients, recognizing behavioral changes, supporting dignity and independence and properly caring for people with cognitive conditions,\u201d Underwood said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The House also advanced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.akleg.gov\/PDF\/34\/Bills\/HB0096D.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HB 96<\/a>, sponsored by Rep. Mike Prax, R-North Pole, which would establish a Home Care Employment Standards Advisory Board to investigate and provide a biennial report on wages, workforce and working conditions for home care personnel. The board would be required to meet at least three times annually. The bill also ensures that 70% of Medicaid funding to agencies providing home and community-based services will go directly to employees and benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe home care industry has kind of developed organically if you will and there are no professional licensing requirements at this time, but they do need to set up some recognizable standard to organize the industry for purposes of pay and services,\u201d Prax said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bill passed 35-5 in the House Monday and advanced to the Senate for consideration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alexis Rodich, director of Alaska and Montana SEIU 775, a union representing long-term care workers, said in April that the bill is a solution to a caregiver workforce crisis and provides accountability for Medicaid dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maydaystrong.org\/#:~:text=They%20are%20demanding%20a%20nation%20that%20puts,*%20Stopping%20the%20billionaire%20takeover%20of%20government\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">May Day events<\/a> will happen in many cities Friday, including Seattle, Yakima and Spokane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brenda Morgan, an executive board member with <a href=\"https:\/\/seiu775.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Service Employees International Union 775<\/a>, otherwise known as “the caregivers’ union,” said all are welcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>“This is community members coming together,” she said. “This is people that want to voice their concern. This is people raising awareness of what our labor movement has done for us as workers. Don’t keep quiet. Come out. Join us.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Morgan said it’s thanks to the union that she and other caregivers now make a living wage, have health insurance and more job security. The union says the negotiations lasted nearly a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The facilities included in the agreement are as follows:<br>Sunnyside Healthcare Center in Sunnyside.<br>Mountain View Post Acute in Ellensburg.<br>Linden Post Acute in Toppenish.<br>Colonial Vista Post Acute in Wenatchee.<br>LaCamas Creek Post Acute in Camas.<br>Richland Post Acute in Richland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Union members are voting on the contract from Thursday, March 26 through Monday, March 30. If approved, the wage increases would take effect over the life of the two-year agreement, with exact amounts varying by location and job classification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Angel Cabrera, a certified nursing assistant at Sunnyside Healthcare Center, said the wage increase would help with staff retention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>“The cost of living keeps going up. At Richland Post Acute, we are caring for residents with high needs, often on a skeleton crew of staff. The deal, if ratified, would increase wages and address staffing concerns that workers say have strained care in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe cost of living keeps going up. But the wage scale hasn\u2019t kept up,\u201d said Angel Cabrera, a certified nursing assistant at Sunnyside Healthcare Center, in a union press release. \u201cWe know we make a positive difference in the health and the lives of nursing home residents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cabrera added that improved wages would also have a broader impact on the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are people caring for your family, friends and neighbors. When we make livable wages, that money circulates in our local community, supporting our area small businesses and families,\u201d Cabrera said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For nearly a year, union-represented care staff at multiple rural Washington nursing homes have been negotiating with PACs, a corporation valued at approximately $6.7 billion, seeking higher wages and improved staffing levels. Workers have argued that better pay is necessary to reduce turnover and ensure consistent, safe care for residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read the full article at <a Richland nursing home and others in the Yakima Valley are voting on a new labor contract that would increase wages 8% over two years if ratified. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CNAs, who are represented by union SEIU Local 775, had negotiated the new contract with PACs Group Inc., which owns six nursing homes in the state, including <a href=\"https:\/\/richlandpa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Richland Post Acute<\/a>, for the past year, according to information from the Washington State Labor Council. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PACs Group is a Utah-based skilled nursing care provider founded in 2013 that currently operates 323 facilities across 17 states. The company reported 2025 revenue of $5.29 billion in early March, an increase of 29.3% over the prior year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Care workers reportedly were focused on securing more competitive wages, seeking lower turnover and improved staffing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are caring for residents with high needs, often on a skeleton crew of staff,\u201d said Anadelia Flores, a CNA at Richland Post Acute, said in a statement. \u201cOur work is essential and we deserve to be treated that way. Caregivers aren\u2019t in this line of work just for a paycheck.
