Republicans in Congress have approved a budget framework that could slash over $800 billion from Medicaid. If this budget passes, it will have severe impacts on our clients, us as caregivers, and nearly 80 million people who depend on it.
These cuts would mean:
- Our clients lose eligibility of services – access to healthcare and medication – and care hours
- Caregivers lose working hours and pay
- Many caregivers would lose healthcare because client hours would be reduced and wouldn’t meet the minimum requirement anymore
- Many caregivers could lose retirement
- There will be less caregiver job opportunities available
Our Union will not stop fighting back against these cuts. As the threat of Medicaid cuts grows, so does our fight to save it! Learn more about what our Union is doing to take action to protect Medicaid from our SEIU 775 President, Sterling Harders.

WHAT OUR UNION IS DOING
When our jobs and clients’ care are under threat, our Union takes action! Caregivers across Washington, Montana, and Alaska are speaking out to protect Medicaid.
WASHINGTON D.C.
15 SEIU 775 caregivers from Washington, Montana, and Alaska traveled to Washington, D.C. to rally for Medicaid and meet with Members of Congress about the importance of protecting these vital programs.

WASHINGTON
In Washington, caregivers have been advocating to Members of Congress about how critical Medicaid funding is for their clients.
Alyssa O., an IP and AP from Sedro Woolley, WA, recently spoke with Representative Rick Larsen at a roundtable about how her clients’ necessary care and specialized doctors are all covered by Medicaid. Rep. Larsen afterward pulled Alyssa aside and asked her to share more about the impact – you can watch the clip here.
Nelly P., an IP from Sunnyside, WA, joined healthcare workers from Central and Eastern Washington on a press call with Senator Patty Murray to sound the alarm about the looming Medicaid cuts.
“I’m really upset about potential Medicaid cuts; what about clients who depend on Medicaid funding to receive care, what’s going to happen to them? Where are they going to get the money for life saving treatments? Republican lawmakers don’t see who they’re impacting and what they’re doing.”
– Nelly P. (IP, Sunnyside, WA)

MONTANA
In Montana, we are celebrating saving and winning Medicaid Expansion here at a state level, which means we are now putting our full attention on saving Medicaid federally.
Montana caregivers first fought to pass Medicaid Expansion in 2015 and successfully defended it in 2025 with the passage of HB 245, which removed the sunset provision. In February, it passed in the Senate 29-21—a significant victory! Collectively, caregivers left 300 messages urging legislators to vote “yes.”
ALASKA

Alaskan caregivers and community members, rallied in Juneau at the state Capitol, calling on Alaska’s congress to stand up for Medicaid. You can read more about the rally here.
On February 20, Caregivers gathered outside Senator Murkowski and Senator Sullivan’s offices to rally against Medicaid cuts. Kim A., a caregiver from Anchorage, AK, spoke about her clients who rely on Medicaid for essential and life-saving care. In addition to the rally, Kim also traveled to Washington, D.C., to advocate for her clients and Alaskans who depend on Medicaid. Watch Kim’s rally speech here.
We’re also holding our Members of Congress accountable. Caregiver Essie F. from Fairbanks, AK, traveled to DC in December and spoke with Representative Nick Begich III there where “she said she was well received by Begich. ‘He assured that he 100% backed us on fighting to not have any cuts to Medicaid,” said Frank. Now, she said she feels betrayed by his vote.’” You can read the full article where she shares this with other Alaska Natives here.
